Why does the broiler get its own page? Easy.
The broiler in your oven is one of the best things that ever happened to making pizza at home...
High heat matters when making pizza. The hotter the oven, the more "pop" you get in your dough, making the crust taste great while the sides get crispy and the interior stays soft and the toppings cook well and the cheese melts evenly and--well, it's a more satisfying, pro-quality pie.
The thermal mass of your baking surface combined with the high-heat of your broiler makes for good pizza-baking conditions. Once you've preheated your baking surface, switching on the broiler before you bake mimics the conditions in a proper pizza oven. (And speaking as someone who once had a kitchen with a wood-fired oven, I acknowledge that this isn't quite the same, but it is much easier to operate.)
Don't have a broiler? Or is your broiler on the bottom of the oven? Don't worry about it. You can still make a great pizza. It just takes a little longer. Put your baking surface in the top of your oven, and bake 'til brown and bubbly.
